A significant portion of our workforce comes from a military background, and we offer many roles that are a great fit for the skills you’ve gained through your service.

Support for active military members and spouses

For those who are still actively serving, we provide you and your spouse with the flexibility needed to serve in the National Guard or Reserves. At United Rentals, we:

  • Safeguard the jobs of employees who serve in the uniformed services
  • Support reserve training commitments
  • Provide job protection for both service members and eligible family members during an active leave or medical leave
  • Provide career opportunities for military spouses through our Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP)
  • Offer additional support and resources for military members and their families through our Veterans United Employee Resource Group

Veterans United: Together, we’re making a difference

At United Rentals, our Veterans United employee resource group is committed to the effective placement, transition and career development of all current and former service members and spouses. We honor and celebrate the military principles and camaraderie veterans bring to our company culture, encourage engagement with community partners who serve veterans and provide a supportive veteran ecosystem through networking and sponsorship.

Career Skills Programs

We offer Skillbridge, Individual Career Skills Program (CSP) and Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) programs to active-duty U.S. and Canadian veterans within 6 months of separation. We have training locations near most military bases throughout the U.S. and Canada. This is real-world job experience, with a trusted veteran-friendly employer. We are seeking veterans who are able to start work within 90 days of separation of service.

These programs include:

  • On the job training (OJT) and learning of products, systems, safety and company culture
  • Job rotations
  • Upon completion, participants are eligible to receive full-time employment
  • Relocation may be available to any of our 1500+ locations with open positions

How we give back to the military community

We are particularly supportive of military veterans, and provide significant assistance to nonprofits that help disabled veterans.

  • Committed to aiding veterans in their daily lives, Soldier Strong focuses on providing Ekso Bionic suits for disabled veterans. United Rentals has sponsored the donation of two Ekso suits to the Boston and Dallas VA hospitals.
  • Turns for Troops assists American military veterans who suffered major injuries or post-traumatic stress while serving their country by funding access to state-of-the-art rehabilitation programs and technologies through SoldierStrong, and provides critical support for financial and housing security following military service through Operation Homefront. Through Turns for Troops, United Rentals has donated more than $2.3 million since 2016, as an extension of our partnerships with INDYCAR driver Graham Rahal, and NASCAR drivers Austin Hill and Ryan Preece.
  • United Rentals partners with the Fisher House Foundation in the U.S. and Valour Place in Canada, non-profits that provide a network of comfort homes for veterans and military families receiving treatment.

After leaving the military, I worked for several large companies. None has valued my military experience like United Rentals. This company lets me use what I learned in the military while teaching me new skills with its robust training programs. United Rentals truly has the same “family” atmosphere I felt in the military that can make veterans feel at home.

As an Army veteran, like most I struggled to find a career once my service was complete. United Rentals has provided me with an opportunity to have a career where my values and service are appreciated. I have been able to advance from a Technician to my most recent promotion to Branch Manager.

This is the largest rental company in the industry, which offers employees great opportunities. United Rentals acknowledges service members better than any company I have ever worked. In the military, teamwork was vital in accomplishing our missions and I have applied that here.
It is a great place to work.

United Rentals is a company with a great team mentality. Service members will feel right at home with the ‘let’s get the mission done’ atmosphere. Excellence is rewarded with promotion opportunities, especially for those willing to relocate (which vets are used to doing).

What I like most about working at United Rentals is the opportunity it affords me to grow. In the military, I was trained as a Mechanic and when I went to NCO school, I was trained on many management techniques. I was hired as a Mechanic and have moved up through many positions to Branch Manager.

I started my career in United Rentals about 4 years ago as an Equipment Associate, I am now a Team Lead for our Sales Development Program. The thing I love about United Rentals is that your career can grow as fast as you want it to with hard work and dedication. These are values I learned from the Military and my Military parents. UR cares about its Veterans like no company I have ever worked for and encourages you at every corner to get involved to change for the better. I love this company just as much as I loved serving my country. Hoooorahhhhhhh.

After deciding to leave the Marine Corps, I knew I had to find my next career and luckily, United Rentals' STEP (Service To Employment Program) found me! When I started working at United Rentals, my Service Manager told me about STEP (Service to Employment Program). The program has helped me develop into a strong technician while receiving the necessary knowledge for my success. It was an excellent decision, and in a few short months I have trained on different pieces of equipment and feel like I have the tools to succeed in my career. United Rentals is an awesome company with great benefits and opportunities. Each day is an exciting challenge.
